This mantel is constructed from a single cedar log, cut to preserve the live edge face to keep the natural rustic look and feel. Much of the sapwood on this log had lost its structural integrity and had to be removed, because of this you can see some of the red/pink colors cedar has coming through the front face. The mantel was finished with a black finish which made the red heartwood turn into a rich and deep burgundy/maroon color, and the lighter sapwood into a deep black, grey, and brown mixture.
