Bookmatch slabs are two slabs that were cut adjacently from a log. Due to this, you can "open" the two slabs like a book and both sides will be almost identical. The top on this one of a kind coffee table is a bookmatch set of walnut. The way these two slabs came together left a gap in the middle that was filled with a copper colored epoxy that has a wild swirling design to it. The legs are also crafted from walnut, one leg has an epoxy stripe, matching the top. While the other leg still has a little bit of bark in the center split area. Hidden underneath the top, this piece is hiding LED lights powered by a battery and a touch sensor, all fit flush with the bottom and can all easily be replaced.
The focus of this project was to try and push the style and design boundaries of custom rustic furniture. This piece can fit with many different styles and themes, opening new possibilities. Once that was accomplished, the next goal was to make the piece come to life. This was achieved by putting an LED light in the outer edge of the epoxy, on the under side. When the light is turned on by a touch sensor embedded in the corner of the table top, the coppery orange epoxy glows like lava. While the epoxy in the leg does not have a light in it, the down glow from the LED casts an orange hue on everything underneath the table, further bringing it all to life. The lights are powered by a battery pack that is also embedded into the top. The battery does not need to be removed to recharge, simply plug the power cord straight into the table. A natural knot in the wood was utilized to run a cord through it that is hardly noticeable, this is where you recharge or power the table. The lights can run while plugged in as well, for the option to leave them on all the time.
