Constructed of a bookmatched sycamore top and a highly figured walnut base, this table is a one of a kind beauty. The base was made out of three slabs of walnut, the two thick bottom feet were made of one thick 4" slab of walnut. The four curved upright legs of the base were all constructed from one superbly figured walnut slab. The long curved crossboard connecting the two ends of the base was a single piece of walnut that was cut in half and glued to maximize the size and curve.
The bookmatched sycamore top offers plenty of symmetry with wild grain lines and colors. The outer edges are heavy with a sycamore style of a quartersawn look. The tops of the benches, made to match the table, are actually cut off from the ends of the table top; the bench tops are also bookmatched to each other.
The inspiration for the base came from the curves and flow of the rich beam work in the beautiful house this table was made for. The entire base was built and put together with oak dowels, the only screws in the whole table are used to make the top and bottom able to be taken apart/held together.
